CATHERINE QUANT SUTTON "Karen"

Passed away at her home on January 9, 2014. Karen was a lifelong Virginia resident who grew up in Alexandria, attended Fort Hunt High School, Randolph-Macon Women's College and James Madison University, where she earned a MA in Library Science. All who knew her, especially her loving family, her friends, and her colleagues at Osbourn High School truly enjoyed every moment of time spent with her. Karen enjoyed reading, traveling, family reunions, concerts, and jigsaw puzzles. While she did many amazing things in her life, her favorite thing was spending time with her family, especially her five grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her husband of forty years, Lawrence Sutton; daughter, Jennifer Sutton and husband, Alan Trunkey of Suquamish, WA, daughter, Amy Sutton-Graham and husband, Christopher Graham of Springfield VA, son, Lawrence Sutton, III and wife, Katie Sutton of Carrolton TX and daughter, Katie Sutton and Larry Ayala of Woodbridge, VA; and five grandchildren, Sophia Sutton-Ayala, Greta and Patrick Trunkey, Charlotte and Andrew Graham. She is also survived by seven siblings, Susan Willetts and family, Gretchen Quant, Lauren Stickles and family, Sharon Slater and family, Larry Quant and family, David Quant and family, and Michael Quant and family.

I am so sorry to hear of Karen's passing.  I remember her from our days at St. Mary's Elementary School in Alexandria.  She was a lovely person who always had a smile on her face.

Having grown up across the street from the Quant home on the corner of Stirrup Lane/Camden Street I have lots of fun memories with all 8 of the kids.  I remember Karen, being older than Gretchen and I, was so "cool" and knew all of the latest dances.  When she came home from college she would take the time to teach us the latest dance moves. (Now all of you that are reading this, know why Gretchen and I were such great dancers!)

I also remember when Karen became engaged to Larry.  Everyone was so excited as this was the first wedding on the block.  Larry was adored by everyone.

My heart and love is with all of the Quant and Sutton families.

Karen was my swim instructor at Stratford Recreaction Association in 1971.  She was a guard, and, as my father wrote in the '71 SRA "yearbook' a "real great gal!.  David and family I am sorry for your loss.  I am sure that she will be deeply missed by all of you.

Not only could Karen swim and dance, she could also sing a play the guitar! We had an informal but talented all girls band and we practiced in Rosemary's basement. You never heard of us?
We also won swim team ribbons in the first 15-18 girls! (there were only 5 of us!)

We remained best friends all these years and shared so many important and special moments.
The Quant and Sutton families are the most loving and caring and fun family ever! They will miss their dear Karen and so will I!

I am devastated to learn of Karen's death. She was a wonderful friend.  Although we connected occasionally through the years since graduation, we finally got to spend time together last summer at the reunion.  I did not know she was ill and am so sorry that such a great person as Karen is lost to the world at a young age.  To Larry and family I send my sincere sympathy.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I would have to say that Karen and I were more acquaintenances rather than close friends.  With that said, we had many long talks.  I knew she went to Randolph Macon Women's College; however after high school I lost track of her.  Many years later (@1993) I met her mother thru my mother at a "I think the garden club" gathering .  I was so pleased as I was able to find out how Karen was and that she was happy.  I know each of us have our own separate memories of her.  What I remember about Karen is that she was amazingly smart; and was so comfortable in her own skin.  Karen truly touched me; she is one of the people who's face has popped up in my brain over and over again over the years.  Other than her hair no longer being red, and time being gentle; Karen Looks Like Karen.  My condolences to her family.
