I was reading through Newsweek magazine in the 1980's and there was an article on AIDS...which was newly identified at the time. It talked about those who were lost from all ages, races, sexes and walks of life. I was shocked to see a photo of someone who looked just like Keith Kendall Farrington. I shared Art classes with him for a few years. He was quiet, brilliant and a gifted artist and he wore sandals made out of recycled car tires. The article identified him as a gifted artist, so I knew it couldn't be a coincidence. Plus they named him as Keith Farrington. What a loss. Keith's 15 minutes of fame while in high school was when he climbed a tree on Sherwood Hall Lane when they were widening the road. He was protesting the county's decision to cut down a magnificent, old tree. He stayed in that tree for two days. The road widening was a lot of controversy at the time and he made the local news. I never kept in touch with Keith after high school, but somewhere buried in my high school memorabilia, I know I still have a frog that he drew for me. I hope I can find it.

Keith was my dear friend at my 7th grade art table, and we laughed and giggled our way through many a class. He was a dear soul and  I will always remember him with a smile.  He is remembered on the AIDS quilt, and you can see his panel below.  I'm not sure who made it for him, but it is suitable to remember him with this largest community art project in existence. Rest in peace, friend.

Ahh...thanks for posting the quilt. That tree looks like the one they cut down on Sherwood Hall Lane.  Glad to know that that memory has now been explained to those who didn't know the significance.

Hey, Fleur,

I had the honor of working on the AIDS quilt with his mother and brothers and Gary Farrington, my husband.  Keith died so young.  He will always be missed.
