Gretchen Marie Schlight Maloney, 40, who retired from Washington Hospital Center in 2001 as a clinical resource coordinator, died April 6 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. She had congestive heart failure and a lung ailment.

Mrs. Maloney, an Alexandria resident, joined the hospital in 1984 as a critical-care nurse in the burn unit. She retired on disability from her final job, in which she interpreted insurance policies to judge the limit of a patient's hospital stay.

She was born in Princeton, N.J., and came to the Washington area at age 11. She was a 1978 graduate of the old Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria.

She attended Stephens College in Missouri and received a nursing diploma in 1984 from St. Vincent's hospital in New York. She was a 1991 nursing graduate of George Mason University.

She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Survivors include her husband, Michael P. Maloney, whom she married in 1999, of Alexandria; her parents, retired Air Force Col. John Schlight and Ellen Schlight, of Alexandria; two sisters, Nora Rowny and Julia Bunnell, both of Alexandria; and a brother, John Andrew Schlight of England.
