Tom passed away on May 17, 2005, at age 53 from complications from multiple myeloma.  He is survived by Bob Philopena '67; Richard Philopena '72; Ann Philopena '74; Patricia Philopena Herman '76.

Words and memories by Ann Philopena:

"Great brother and amazing uncle. He had the most wonderful sense of humor. He died way too soon."

"Funny man who was adored by his nieces and nephews. Father of the amazing 'zuluball' played in our parents backyard during summer picnics."

"Tom was a very funny guy. Forever the jokester and duffer. Tom would travel between VA and Fl to find the best courses. The thing he probably loved more than golf was his family. His nieces and nephews loved him dearly and were always ready for the somewhat famous annual game of Zulu ball at the Philopena estates. The game always ended up in some argument or someone crying. But we waited with bated breath for the infamous Zulu pitch that Tom was semi famous for. His life was cut short by multiple myeloma, blood cancer, which cannot be cured but life can be prolonged through a stem cell transplant. Consider being a donor. Be A Match. Tom was a bright star but like most bright stars they shine very briefly."
