It is with great sorrow that I share with you the passing of Gary McNett, FHHS Class of 1968, and one of the best athletes Fort Hunt High School ever had the honor to claim as one of their own. He was a star football, basketball, and track team Varsity institution, having been instrumental in helping our teams from 1964 to 1968 go to numerous State competitions. Probably best exemplified in 1968 when Gary competed in his regular seven events OUTSCORED the entire Groveton track team in a single meet!

After graduation from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, Gary returned to this area living in Bowie, MD. where he owned a construction company.  He is survived by his sister Barbie (FHHS Class of 1967).  Gary passed on Monday, March 12th, 2018, having battled diabetes complicated by coronary problems. With a quiet funeral, he requested donations be given to fight diabetes. You may go to the Robert Evans Funeral Home website for information or to leave a remembrance.

INFO FROM THE FUNERAL HOME WEBSITE:

Gary Edwin McNett of Bowie, Maryland, passed away quietly in his sleep on Monday morning, March 12, 2018. Gary was born in Frankfurt, Germany, 68 years ago. Upon returning to the United States at the age of two, he lived in Virginia before eventually moving to Bowie, MD with his significant companion, Beverly Davis.

Gary was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he was a student athlete and had success on the football field and with the track and field team. Upon graduation he worked for the family business in Northern Virginia and enjoyed travelling the country on his motorcycle.

In the late 1980’s, Gary set up his own successful business, SJI Contractors, and was involved in home improvement and construction work throughout Maryland, Northern Virginia, and D.C. Politics and sports were his favorite topics and he could talk about them for hours. He very much enjoyed his immediate and extended families and he will be greatly missed by them all – especially at Christmas time with his creative and unique Christmas presents.

He is survived by his loving sister, Barbara McNett Evans (Michael); his nephews John (Nell) and Jeff (Ola) Evans; his grandniece Caitlyn, his grandnephew Ethan; as well as Beverly’s daughters, Jeana Paratore and Ilana Kitchen.

Services were held on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD, followed by a memorial luncheon at the Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Gary was a wonderful friend and teammate.  Always unselfish, always giving 100%, and always a gentleman.  One of the best athletes Ft. Hunt ever had.  Rest in peace.

Gary and I both lived in Villamay and we played many a basketball pick up game in my backyard (he won many and I won one). We both ended up playing on the varsity basketbal team in 1968 at FHHS. Gary was a year ahead of me and he would pick me up in his 1965 Mustang to go to practice and games (wasn't life good?). He was a great guy and a well rounded athlete.  If I am not mistaken, he also attended Hollin Hills Elementary, again, a grade ahead of me.

Great memories of a Great Guy!

I had several classes with Gary and although I was not a good friend of his, he was easy to remember because of his character, attitude and effort. Gary was a very good guy and he will be missed.

When I moved to Texas in the 1970's Gary came to see me.. He was such much more than a super athlete...he was an especially wonderful man and friend.
