Duncan Stearns - Class Of 1967

Duncan Stearns died May 29, 2012.

"Duncan Stearns was born April 28, 1949 in Washington D.C., the older child of John and Hattie Stearns. During his formative years he successively lived in Garrett Park and Glen Burnie MD, and later in Alexandria VA. His connection and love of music began when he was four years of age and remained the core of his interest throughout his life.

"Duncan’s education included The Aspen Music Festival, where he was a student of the great Russian pedagogue, Rosina Lhevinne; The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland; The Philadelphia Musical Academy, a student of Susan Starr; and graduating from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

"He was an excellent musician; a Steinway Artist. Duncan recorded for the Musical Heritage Society, and had performed extensively here and abroad. His works have been published by Willis Music Company, and Lyon and Healy Company.

"Duncan has been a long-time church musician, serving as Music Director and organist at churches in Philadelphia (Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church), and in Delaware County, PA; Bethany Collegiate Presbyterian Church, Havertown; St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Springfield; and at the time of his death, Reformation Evangelical Lutheran Church, Media. Duncan has also served on the faculty at Eastern University, St. Davids PA in piano and harp since 1995. He is survived by his friend, Arnold Richter; his sister, Linden Spruill; and his brother-in-law, Larry Spruill. Friends are invited to his Funeral Service Tuesday at 10:30am in the J. Nelson Rigby Funeral Home 1 W. Baltimore Avenue Media, calling Monday Evening 7-8:30pm Interment Woodlands Cemetery, Philadelphia."
