Paul Kenneth Boyce - Class Of 1971

DECEASED ALUM:  PAUL BOYCE, FHHS '71

Paul passed away in Utah from a long illness in April of 2017.  Details of his life and passing will be added when we have them.

From those that knew him and played music with him, Paul was a talented musician/guitarist and could reproduce a new recorded song, note-for-note after just one listening.  Paul will be missed by those that knew him.

Very sad notification, and my sorrow goes to everyone who knew Paul.   Godspeed my friend.

Costa.

Terrible news.  I remember playing guitar with Paul on several occasions.  He was indeed good at figuring out songs by ear.  Sometimes we’d listen to the vinyl, pick up needle, place it down again, repeat etc until we got the chords.  This was the bronze age before internet, tab etc.  He was a good lead player & remember watching him jam at Russell Strobel’s house/basement on several occasions.  We traded song arrangements occasionally.  Great guy to hang out with.  Sadly I lost contact with him after graduation and have not heard from him since but I’m still saddened with this news.

John - Thanks for the follow-up.  The memories of Paul's guitar skills were from Gene Strobel, who - along with his brother, Russ - were part of the many neighborhood jam sessions in the pine-paneled Strobel family room.  Stratford-on-the-Potomac had a lot of musical talent and an unusual number of garage bands were formed because of that talent.  I never met Paul myself, but it's nice to hear such good memories about him.  May he rest in peace.

So sad to hear about Paul Boyce passing away, may God rest his soul.  Paul was one of my best friends in high school, and middle school.  He and I played in a "basement" band (not too many garages in Stratford-on-the-Potomac) going back to the seventh grade.  Johhny Benson was our drummer, and Danny Vasilis sang in our band famously known as "Danny and the Dammits".  We later became the "Silver Spune" and played a few times at Aldersgate MYF (Metta Myers and Medora Abbot were a big fans...) and othe big time venues like the Bellview Lutheran church and a couple talent shows at FHHS. My brother Gene joined us on drums at the height of our popularity, when we opened for the Yacht Haven 6th grade dance.

Paul had one of the coolest cars in high school, a 1958 MG-TD convertible (British Racing Green) that he and his Dad restored. We enjoyed cruising down the parkway in that car.  Paul and I took Electronics class together as sophomores with good old Mr. Montecone.  That is where we met Dennis Brittingham and became fast friends together.  If any of you ever took that class, you might remember how much fun Mr. Montecone would have rigging up a little transformer and a battery inside of a box with a couple wires coming out of it.  He would get a few kids together to hold hands (on this occasion me, Paul and Dennis) and complete the circle with two kids holding the wires.  That little box would jump up the voltage to about 1,000 volts and I will never forget Mr. Montecone laughing so hard that he was crying when he threw the switch and knocked us on our butts.

So it comes to pass with Dennis gone, and now Paul -- that you begin to realize how much closer we are to the far side than from where we have come. I have shed a few tears today for Paul, but am happy that I knew him and grew up with him by my side and espcially glad that we learned to play music together.

This photo has been posted in the "In Memory" pages for all three Federals in this photos who have passed.

Russel Strobel shared this photo with me recently with four (4) Class of 1971 FHHS Grads. The photo has three grads that are not with us today, including Paul - on the right.

In the photo are (L-R) Bob Spencer, Dennis Brittingham, Russ (survivor) and Paul Boyce.  All gone too soon.
