Terry Lynn Duel Thomas, 53, a senior staff scientist since 1999 at the National Cancer Institute's division of cancer epidemiology and genetics, died of cancer March 3 at her home in Silver Spring.

Dr. Thomas's specialty was epidemiology, the study of the causes of epidemics or widespread diseases.

Her career in government started in 1971, when she joined NCI's epidemiology branch as a statistical assistant. She became an epidemiologist there in 1978 and left in 1987 to join what became the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she worked on studies about the effects of Agent Orange on Vietnam War veterans.

Terry Lynn attended William & Mary, Class of 1970 (http://www.wmalumni.com/person/4504248/Terry-Thomas.htm), and is recognized, In Memoriam, at The National Cancer Institute (http://chernobyl.cancer.gov/collaborators.html) for her  involvement in cancer research on The Chernobl Accident "from the earliest days following the accident and continued ... scientific input until the time of [her death]."
