Julia Williamson Duncan succumbed to cancer on October 18, 2024, passing away in her home surrounded by loved ones. Julia was born May 26, 1960 in Bethesda to Agnes Wirt Tawresey Duncan and Capt. George Chamberlain Duncan. As the child of a naval captain, Julia spent her formative years in Japan and much of her adolescence and young adulthood in various states on the east coast before finding her home in St. Mary's County, Maryland. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor's degree in English, Julia worked as an editor for decades – most famously for Time-Life Books and most recently for a medical journal publisher.

Julia was brilliant, compassionate, and adored her children. She loved science fiction, true crime, and rediscovering her green thumb in the final years of her life. An extraordinarily curious person, she never met a new topic of interest she wasn't eager to learn more about. She was a spitfire who stood up for those she felt were mistreated and touched the lives of everyone she met. Julia defended her peace and safety, along with those of her family, with an intense zeal. She understood how the world was meant to be and would brook no discussion otherwise. She possessed a tenacity that few could match, and her passion will be missed.

She is survived by those who will miss her most: husband and partner of more than 40 years, Richard G. Waldrop; son, Kai W. Duncan and his wife, Brittany D. Cali; daughter, Hannah G. Waldrop and her husband, Jeremy S. Schmidt; sister, Agnes "Gill" Duncan; and her brothers, Alfred T. Duncan and George C. Duncan, Jr.

An informal memorial will be held on the morning of Mother's Day, May 11, 2025 at the Leonardtown Wharf Park in Leonardtown, MD. The best way to pay your respects to Julia's memory is to stay true to yourself. She encouraged her children and loved ones to remain steadfast in their morals and convictions in the face of conformity. The second-best way would be to make monetary donations to local charities that support children or animals. Julia was proud to help those who couldn't help themselves.
