Susan Manola Obituary - FHHS '65

Susan E. Manola, 68, a singer and retired teacher in the Fairfax County Public Schools, passed away on November 20, 2015 at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, VA after a brief illness. She is survived by her brother, Frank, and sister-in-law Judith, and was preceded in death by her father Albert, and mother Frances. Born and raised in Alexandria, VA, and a long-time resident there, Susan will be remembered as an amazing sister, relative, and friend. As a music teacher, her school choirs won honors. A talented musician, she sang in many Washington, DC area groups, including the nationally-recognized Choral Arts Society of Washington and Washington Bach Consort. As a member of these groups, she performed with the world's leading orchestras and conductors, made numerous recordings, participated in a number of European tours, and was a frequent performer in such national TV programs as "A Capitol Fourth" and "Kennedy Center Honors".

She was also generous with her time and talents in other directions. She provided tender care as her parents aged, and was an avid knitter in the Caps for Kids program to provide warm hats for children in need. She had a long-time interest in horses, and contributed a number of articles to horse-related publications. She continued her generosity in death by donating tissue to the Washington Regional Transplant Community for use in a medical research study being conducted by the National Institutes of Health. A memorial service will be held on January 17, 3 PM, at the Church of the Epiphany, 1317 G Street NW, Washington, DC 20005, where she was a member of the choir and generous supporter of the music program.
