John "Jack" Miller Nottingham - Class Of 1973

John passed away in January 1987 due to AIDS.  He is survived by his parents, Stuart and Anne (now deceased), siblings Stuart, Connie, Richard, Chris, Mary and Ken and adoring nieces and nephews.

"Jack was one of the good ones. He represented FHHS on the TV show 'It's Academic'. More importantly, he was a good big brother who taught me how to read and tie my shoes, and was always there when I needed him.

There are many kind words and accomplishments I could list. I will just say he was our son, brother and uncle, and we loved him very much and miss him every day"

Jack was one of  the smartest mathematicians I ever met .He was the person most responsible for leading us to victory in the Math Team meets during our time at Fort Hunt! That's for certain. Not only did he personally do well (the best on the team), he took the time out to explain to others how to solve the problems.

But more than that... he had one of the biggest hearts. I remember we were both invited to the George Mason scholarship competition and I was doing poorly on the test. Jack gave up  his chance on the examination (and trust me he needed the scholarship) by leaving the exam early and taking me out to make me feel better.

I do miss him.

How and why Jack and I first became friends, I do not recall.  What I do remember well, however, is that it was a friendship that transcended our days at Ft. Hunt.  Although he was a year ahead of me in school, he promised to stay in touch when he left for Georgie Tech.  True to his word...he did.  When I was in school in Tennessee, we even travelled to see each other a few times.  Although we kind of fell out of touch, I always had fond memories of Jack and the gentle soul that he was.  At the 40th, I was talking to Connie and it was like I had just seen Jack yesteday.  I am so glad that he was in my life...if only for a little while.
