Betsy Critzer Obituary
Betsy Thomas Critzer, 64, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died at her home on March 30, 2023, after a most courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Born on December 2, 1958, in Alexandria, Virginia, she was the daughter of Earl Griffith Thomas and Mary Gray Craig Thomas. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and by her husband, Ronald Sterling Critzer of Charlottesville.
Betsy spent her professional career in real estate, working as a real estate appraiser for the County of Albemarle, and then for Pape and Company, Inc. in Charlottesville. She loved her family fiercely, and was passionate about serving her community in ways big and small. She served as an officer and volunteered with the soup kitchen at First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville for many years. In recent years she reconnected with her lifelong love of horses, volunteering for Hope's Legacy Equine Rescue in Afton, VA. For relaxation, she loved nothing more than swimming, boating, waterskiing, and crabbing with her family at the Potomac River in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Betsy is survived by her daughters, Leigh (Trevor) Thraves of Earlysville, Va., and Liz (Andy) Berry of Sperryville, Va.; three grandchildren, Trip Thraves, Sam Thraves, and Sterling Berry; as well as siblings, Jack (Claudia) Thomas of Canton, Texas, and Ann Daley (Russ) Tate of Richmond, Va. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews, and dearly loved friends.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Kari Ring, MD, and the gynecological oncology team at UVA Health for their compassionate care of Betsy through this fight, and to the village of friends and family who brought meals and helped care for Betsy in her final days.
A celebration of Betsy's life will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023, 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Park Street in Charlottesville. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Hope's Legacy Equine Rescue, 5145 Taylor Creek Road, Afton, VA 22920, or at hopeslegacy.com.
