Paul Herbst

PAUL HERBST, FHHS CLASS OF 1979

Date Of Birth:
Date Deceased:
Age at Death: 53
Cause of Death: Heart Attack
Alum City: Alexandria
Alum State: VA
Alum Country: USA
Was a Veteran: No
Survived By: Nannette Relyea Herbst (also a Fort Hunt grad), Brother Mark (also a Fort Hunt grad), two children and one grand child.

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of my Fort Hunt friend Paul Herbst ('79) who left us last week and was memorialized yesterday in Fredricksburg, VA. Paul's health had been in question for the last 4-5 years and his passing was fast. Locally, he is survived by his brother Mark (also a FH grad) and family that resides in Waynewood.

As a Fort Hunt student in the mid-1970's, it was not unusual for to walk to school when you were a 9th or 10th grade (over 90% of us did), Paul and I walked together every day, meeting at the intersection of Croton and Doter in Waynewood. Back then we were encouraged to talk about anything but religion and politics, and Paul and talked rock and roll music and sports.

A dedicated friend even though our peer groups changed back in late 70's, we were reunited as adults back in the late 1990's through the "Children of Chernobyl" which was run locally at OPMH and Christ Church. Paul's quiet. calming personality were his greatest traits! Always a joy to talk with and catch up with, Paul will be missed by all who knew him.

Thanks for posting this, Don. I was with Paul from Waynewood on. He was always one of the tallest kids in whatever class I was in, and I was always one of the smallest. I remember him as such a genuinely nice guy, every single year. He was pretty quiet, never got an attitude, and was kind to everyone. I'm so sorry that such a kind and gentle soul passed away so early. I hope his grandchild remembers him always.

Rest in peace, Paul. Like Susan mentions, I too remember you from Waynewood and Foster - a kind and gentle soul. Godspeed to points beyond. Condolences to all. -r/b

Thank you for posting this Don. Your words were so kind and I am sure all that knew Paul share your sentiments. Such sad news. Thoughts and prayers going out to Paul's family.

Such sad news about such a gentle soul.  As Susan said he was always one of the tallest and I was with her in the shortest category but he was always so kind and quiet. I hope his family reads some of these kind comments and knows he will be missed by so many of the FHHS family.

Paul and I shared many classes from elementary school onward.  He was always kind and fun to be around, and had friends in many different circles.  He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him.

I remember Paul at waynewood elementary, He was  tall and stood out  in the classroom, he was a gentle giant with a quiet personality that should have been given a bigger desk than the rest of us because he seemed a bit crowded in the standard school issue  desk   ( his knees hit the bottom of the writing board,) he was tall. Paul was always very polite to everyone in our class. quiet spoken and friendly.  .I did not keep up with  Paul over the years, but I am sure he he remained the same kind of  guy  who would  go on to be a great father and family man. R.I.P.  Paul    sincerely Kirk
