Dave Granahan - Class Of 1973

DECEASED ALUM:  DAVE GRANAHAN, FHHS '73

Dave Granahan, FHHS '73, passed away Friday, June 21, 2019 from stomach cancer and infection.  Dave fought esophageal cancer last year, but eventually the diseases took over and he could fight no more.

Dave worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Belvoir for many years and earned a government retirement pension.  He enjoyed life in the Gunston Manor neighborhood a.k.a. "The Manor" where he participated in the activities of the neighborhood and took advantage of being close to the Potomac River.

Dave earned his pilot's license as a young adult, despite losing an eye as a child.

He retired a few years back and moved to the beach in North Carolina to enjoy his retirement.  He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.  Dave also leaves behind his older sister Donna Granahan (FHHS '69) and younger brother Greg (FHHS '80).

Growing-up, he was well-known in the Stratford-on-the-Potomac neighborhood where he had many friends and was among the Muscle Car group that came out of that neighborhood.  He was also part of the "Mallinson Crew" and the "Tower House Crew" there.  Dave would borrow his parent's 1970 Pontiac Gran Prix and would eventually own a green, fastback 1967 Dodge Charger that he was quite proud of.  I got a ride in that Gran Prix one day that I will never forget.

Dave and I went to St. Mary's Catholic School together, where we were both tried to grow up too fast.  We made quite a name for ourselves as we tried to outwit the nuns - with little success.  Dave was a lot of fun.

Overall, Dave led a private life, not socializing much, but he kept up with friends and classmates via email and was always curious how everyone was doing.

Photo below is Dave with his daughter and his faithful dog, Harley.

I'll miss Dave.
