Abby Wheeler (Bernard) - Class Of 1972

Abby Wheeler Bernard -  FHHS - Class of '72  (graduated elsewhere)

 (September 4, 1954 - October 22, 2015)

Abby Wheeler Bernard, age 61, a resident of Warrenton, VA, passed away on October 22nd, 2015 surrounded by loved ones. The daughter of Col and Mrs. Bernard D. Wheeler, Abby's childhood was spent at various Army posts with her sister, Liz. An avid horseback rider, she was the youngest to receive her hunt colors at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. She received her BHSAI degree from Crabbet Park Horse Master school in Crawley, England. Shortly after graduating from Southern Seminary Junior College in Buena Vista, she maried her beloved husband of almost 40 years, Paul Bernard.

Abby became a well-known horseback riding instructor, but decided to settle down in Warrenton, VA with Paul and their son, Chris. She thrived in the local community with her artwork and various entrepreneurial endeavors. She volunteered for the Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary and Pet Therapy, and also served on the Altar Guild at St. James Episcopal Church. Along with her love of horses and pets, she enjoyed traveling, needlework, painting, and games. Abby loved being with her friends, whether it was for a softball game on their property, the Virginia Gold Cup, or annual reunions with her college chums.

As her health deteriorated (brain cancer), most of her latter years were spent privately with family and close friends. Abby will be deeply missed, particularly by her husband Paul, her son Chris, her mother Ellie, her sister Liz, and other family members. Abby's memorial service will be held on November 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 73 Culpeper St. Warrenton, VA with reception to follow. Interment will be private. My heart was truly saddened when I heard of her passing.  Memories of young happy friends having fun in and around Fort Hunt are still vivid.  I can only picturre her young, smiling face and remember the good times. It has been about 40 years since I last saw Abbey and Paul, yet it feels like only yesterday.

My prayers go out for her and for Paul.
