Andy and I went from elementary school thru Virginia Tech together, tho I didn't know him as well as I would have liked. But he was always such a nice, pleasant young man to run into, as I did in the student union cafe the afternoon before he died. He and I (along with another seventh grade classmate) sat together on the bus we took on a field trip to Williamsburg. The three of us hung around together all day, and that is definitely one of the most fond memories I have of Walt Whitman. I was stunned to learn of his accident, and wish I had written to his family at the time. His death was certainly an enormous loss to them and to the greater community as well...
