George M. Gibbs (Principal, Spring 1963 To Mid-Year 1970/71)

WILLIAMSBURG - George Morgan Gibbs died Tuesday, July 9, 2002. He was born in Danville, Va., on Nov. 9, 1923. He was preceded in death by his father, George W. Gibbs, his mother and stepfather, Irma T. and Alfred Brashear and his first wife, Nancy Hall Gibbs. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as radarman on the Sam Clemente, flagship of the 7th fleet. George graduated from the College of William and Mary, Class of 1949. He received his Master's in Education from the University of Virginia. He moved to Williamsburg upon retirement in 1979 after 33 years with the Virginia public school system (30 years with Fairfax county schools) as a teacher, coach, asst. principal, Principal Coordinator of Curriculum K-12, adult education director and Supervisor of Special Projects. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marian C. Gibbs; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Gibbs and Eugene Mc Claren; a son, Randolph M. Gibbs and stepson Gary L. Cowling; one granddaughter and two great-grandsons. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Williamsburg Memorial Park. Arrangements by Nelsen Funeral Home.
