Obituary for Martin Harrell

Martin Lee Harrell

Elizabeth City 62,
On Friday September 12th, 2014 Marty Harrell graduated to Glory to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Originally from Alexandria, Virginia Marty relocated to Norfolk while serving in the United States Navy and it was here at Rock Church that Marty met his wife of 40 years Sandy Harrell. In 2007 Marty retired from a successful career with the US Government and then relocated to Elizabeth City, NC. Marty was a deacon and an elder of Rock Church for more than 20 years and he also served on School board of Rock Church Academy. Marty loved his family with all of his heart. He loved to teach whenever given the opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed working with wood, crafting and building shelves, birdhouses, and other items that his family will cherish forever.
Marty was predeceased by his mother Marian Harrell and father William Harrell. He is survived by his loving wife Sandy Harrell, daughter Stephanie Warnett, son Matthew Harrell, Son-n-law Douglas Warnett, Daughter-n-Law Rachel Harrell, six grandchildren, Helena, Emily, Kayla, Matthew, Michael and the soon arrival Anna-Grace. Also, two sisters Wanda Murray and Jennifer Jacobus and three God Son’s Brandon, Ethan and Jacob Fary.
Marty always carried a servant’s heart. Whoever came to know him, would know that he loved to tell silly jokes, watch the best team in the NFL the Washington Redskins and spend time with his family. Marty truly demonstrated what Jesus taught in Matthew 22:37-39 The First great commandment “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength and the Second Greatest commandment” You shall love your neighbor as yourself”.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 at 11:00 am at The Rock Church International in Virginia Beach, VA with Rev. Mary Strickland officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at the church for the viewing. A graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation at www.JDRF.org
