Carol Burdette Guiles was a very special friend of mine in high school.  During the summer, 1967, she took me with her to vacation at Big Stone Gap, home of her grandparents, where the mountains were beautiful and the American spirit was strong.  This may have been a source of her true magnificent spirit and constant love for her students.  Carol was fun and darling and charming.  In our freshman year at Fort Hunt High School, she got caught smoking in the Girls Room.  She called my mother, Bonnie Meiselman.  Mom was a natural psychologist, had practiced and loved Carol dearly, who called my Mom, "Mom, Two".  My mother invited Carol, who was suspended from school for the day, to come over and have a cup of coffee at our home.  Carol did.  They had a delightful chat, lady to lady, about not smoking on school grounds.  It worked.  Carol never got in trouble for smoking in school again.  We loved her dearly, she was an extended member of our family.  My heart still aches over her premature death.  She made great and permanent contributions to many souls through her teaching, and even in her death by breast cancer, is a powerful example to teach others not to smoke. Carol was one of those special people that comes along only once in a while.  It gives me great pleasure to have known her and that we considered each other friends.  Hardly a day goes by that I don't remember the good times we shared.  To say I miss Carol is a total understatement.  She was a wonderful person and fellow students, friends and family will never fill the gap left by Carol's passing.
