Janet Sue Hays (1972)

I cannot count the number of times and ways that I've tried to find Pete in the last 20-30 years. He was my best friend in high school, and I always regretted losing touch with him. He joined the military right after graduation and ended up in Washington, apparently for the rest of his life. I only saw him once after that, when he showed up without notice during my sophomore year in college, to propose to me. I never heard from him again, and as the years have unwound, how many times I've wished to see him again and wondered how different, and perhaps better, life would have been had I said yes. I remember writing a poem for him called "These Things I Do Love" for an English class and having to very embarrassingly read it aloud. Every line a flowery description of some beauty in nature, ending with "and the man who showed them to me" (paraphrased) referring to Pete. I did love him. He was a wonder and a delight and all that was good for me my senior year. It's good to see that the same twinkle in his eyes and quirk of his smile that I knew so well stayed with him through his life and I hope his years with his wife and son were good ones. He's passed on far too young and the shock of finally knowing where and how he is, is utterly heartbreaking.
