School Story:

Got B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Environmental Analytical Chemistry from UNLV (where I met my beautiful, intelligent wife Susan, who is also a chemist and microbiologist; we have been married for 27 years)). Worked as consultant and researcher for EPA. Ran the methods development office at AOAC International in Gaithersburg, MD. Obtained ISO and NIST certifications for the manufacture of standards used to test laboratories under contract the the EPAS Superfund office. Made corrections to two errors in the analysis of environmental contaminants in the Code of Federal Regulations. Had five scientific publications. Went to work as contractor to DOE. Worked as staff chemist and remediation supervisor at Nevada Test Site, where, in 2004, I contracted Lyme disease and two coinfections. Have been on ttd since 2009 and have fought workers comp insurance Co for 11 years (and counting). Goodbye retirement!! One bottle of medicine costs $935 for a 1.5 month supply. It adds up. So I am trying to write a book about monetary corruption in government and another on anarcho-syndicalism. Oh by the way, lived next door to Sam Giancona's granddaughter for about 5 years; she and her husband were great neighbors! (If you never heard of him, look him up; you will be surprised.) Heard some very interesting stories!

How often do you get back to Alexandria?

I live in Manassas Park; close enough.

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? Who?

Sadly, no, but I would like to. Update: got in touch with Larry Fields, a good friend and great guy!

What would we be surprised to know about you?

As I have for the past 40 years, I still believe in the legalization of marijuana, the decimation of money-grubbing, benefit-denying insurance companies, libertarians and those insipid Tea Partiers!

What are your memories of high school (i.e. secret crush, embarrassing moment, funniest thing you did in high school, favorite high school hang out, favorite teachers)?

Crushes: vicki vennell (for anyone who knows her, that never would have worked out anyway), stephanie bodemer, Sherri Culbertson, Barbara Harding, Deborah Quant, and Gail Fishman, off the top of my head. History teacher Dr. Levy was great. Mr Firkins was pretty cool too.

Embarrassments: not having the guts to ask out who I was interested in (fear of rejection, I guess.)

Funniest moments: I had the whole classroom laughing (even Mr. Carter, the English teacher) when he asked me what a paradox was. After several seconds I replied "two docks"! Since, I have invented my own paradox from the symptoms of Lyme disease: a clear fog.

Favorite hangout: Ft. Hunt Park, of course.

Biggest thing you would do differently if you went back to your time at high school?

Do more of my own independent studying. This came along later in life and I bury myself in it. While to this day I believe it gave me insights into alternative ways of thinking (most of them positive) and developing a passionate desire of equality and compassion for everyone, I might have lightened up on the drug use.

You don't know me. My name is Steve Ward (class of 72). I am only writing you because of your name. I campaigned for and am a good friend of US Congresswoman Constandina (Dina) Titus from Nevada. Just caught my eye, that's all.

Coll trip with Mr. Levy, wasn't it? I am so very pleased you have been able to keep your cancer at ba!! Keep up the good fight, Dave. Saw your kind comments about Mark Simmons. He was really great friend. I live in Manassas Park, in some semi-fluffy apartments next to the VRE station. Would like to catch up sometime. We apparently have an extensive history working for the government. I have a profile on this site. Look forward to speaking with you. You Goin to the re-education at the old FHHS on Saturday the 25th a 1 p.m.?

Mark was one of my very best friends. We played a lot of baseball and pick-up football together. After our sporting events, we and couple of friend always gathered at his house to watch Star Trek. I heard of Mark's tragic demise from his brother Billy, also a close friend. He was in the process of performing a charitable act. How does it go; no good deed goes unpunished. I miss Mark greatly. He was a very exceptional person.

Suzy was a wonderful, fun-filled, energetic woman. She lived across the street from our place in Waynewood (alden rd.).  Suzy and her sisters were a great group of friends. RIP.
