Richard Lee "Dickie" Anderson II - Class Of 1973

Dickie Anderson was a formidable figure at Fort Hunt High School, a talented athlete, and known to throw one of the fastest pitches of anyone that ever put on a Fort Hunt Federals baseball uniform.  He was a 3-letter athlete and dominated in every sport that he tried.

Dickie passed in a tragic accident while jogging in Lousiana on December 23, 1984 - two days  before Christmas.  See the obituary and prayer card provided by Donna Petrillo Echols (FHHS '72) who was good friends with Dickie.  Donna and her husband, Joe Echols (FHHS '72) named their child after Dickie.  May both Dickie and Joe rest in peace.

Well... the post concerning the incident at McDonalds is true... Now how about some stories about Dickie's famed Four-Four Deuce?

James H. Fletcher (1973)

I'll explain the McDonald's situation, since I knew both of them and they didn't know each other. My friend Greg Beaumont was walking out the door and as Dickie was walking inside, the door struck Dickie. For those of you who knew Dickie well, he lost it. A few words were exchanged and Dickie pushed Greg threw the glass door and end of story. There are a few other stories that Larry and I could bring to light, but those stories may allow you to see Dickie in a much different way.

Hey James are you related to Carl Fletcher?   He used to work wth me and the Harvey clan at Hollin Hall Guif many moons ago.   As I remember weren't you the young lad that jumped off the graduation stage after recieving your diploma and then ran and jumped over the fence around the football field ?      If so I saw the whole scene and I must admit it was pretty damn funny!

Dickie was no doubt  "a man's man".  I can still see him pile-driving the Titan's quarterback into the mud- HEAD first! But one hot summer day will always standout in my memories because the two characters involved are no longer with us. Gary Burke, Bill Gust, Eddie Grant and I  were hanging out at the end of Bainbridge Rd. looking for something to get into; when Dickie and Dana Lewis rolled up in his red Olds. After many laughs and rumors, Dickie decided to depart. Dana was sitting on the right front fender. He was warned  " time to leave and get in".  Dana hesitated! Bad idea....Dickie hit the gas and off they went. For some unknown reason Dana decided to jump off. We all know Dana was not the fastest athlete at FHHS but that day Dana ran 25 mph until he tripped.  He rolled on the hot black top until he came to rest. Jumping up hooting and hollering he chased the car down the road in his bare feet!!! Dickie did stop. Opened the door and away they rolled, leaving us with a memory we will never forget. Thank you, Duel Ballard

The story about Dickie throwing a rock and killing a grouse at FH Parke is true, the guy through the window at McDonalds is true--Dickie parked his Olds between the Planeterium and I think it was the cafeteria ?/, it was not a designated parking place, but no one touched Dickie's ride-Some of the pranks at that time, letting some air, not all out of the tires, messing with the window wipers and screening around with the side mirrors! I you really wanted to be mean, put a potato up the exhaust pipe!!

The one story, it is true, when Coach Grow was the head coach, we were loosing, I think to Annandale, Dickie inserted himself into the game as a Tight End and made a touchdown to win the game-No one was more competitive than "Don't Mess Around With Dickie-" He was honest, fair and a protector of the little guy!

My previous comments on Dickie Anderson, Park is spelled Park, not Parke. threw the rock, not through! When you hurry to complete something, mistakes are not far behind!! Dickie was a great guy.

Hey  Shorty!     How are you doing?      I remember the first time I met you, I had Hessler for earth science and you had t he class room next door.   I believe the two classes would watch those great old geology movies together.  freshman yr. 1973,   A few buddies and I would indulge in some smoke-age before class and laugh at Mr Hesslers crazy lectures.   You were the only teacher that I recall who knew why we were craking up so much.   Those were some fun times,  but you teachers made it great school.               ps  relay more stories if you can!

                                       Talk soon ,  Chuck Huelsman

Hi Chuck,

My, how fast time flies!!  I recall that just walking through the designated smoking area, one could possibly get that "happy feeling" for several minutes!! It is amazing how well the students managed to be successful, but after all it was FHHS. I have many wonderful memories of FHHS and the great students. Hope  U are doing well, I have finally hung up my Test Tubes! Keep in touch!

Shorty
