Dawn Bee McFadden Plumley Memorial Scholarship in Nursing

Dawn McFadden Plumley was a people person. Her sweet nature led friends to surround her like bees to honey.

She brought those magnetic qualities to her nursing career. She was always caring and compassionate.

Dawn was the daughter of an Army colonel, and thus moved often while growing up. Among other places, the family lived in North Carolina, Virginia, South Korea and Germany.

She entered college at Virginia Tech. But later both she and her sister Lois transferred to Clemson, where both graduated with BSN degrees. Less than two years apart in age, Dawn and Lois were best friends as well as sisters.

Dawn married Doug Plumley of Landrum. Both joined the Air Force.

They had two children, Sonya and David. Dawn left the Air Force when she became a mother, and established her nursing career.

In 1989 while just in her early 30s, Dawn died from complications during a surgery.

Lois was a long-time nurse at Aiken Regional Medical Centers before her death in 2009.  When Dawn died, Lois [and] her husband Scott sought a suitable memorial to Dawn’s life and work. They established the scholarship in her name.

It was their hope that the scholarship would ease the financial burden for promising nursing school students. They believed that great nurses are vital to the health of a community.
