Another strong Federal gone too soon.  Keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Dave was fast and tough on the ball field. Four years we played side by side. Coach said he was was the best cross blocker he ever saw.

Very sad news.  Haven't crossed paths with David since FHHS days but I remember David was a big presence wherever he was and will be missed.

Additional Note:  Dave will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery due to his veteran status.  Arlington funerals take months to arrange, but I will get out a message with the details as soon as they are known.

Thanks to everyone who has commented.

Wow! So sad to learn Dave is gone!  We knocked heads many times on the football field and once wrestled between classes in the gym lobby.  Remember Dave appearing at the 10 year reunion, having traveled from the Middle East?

Dave was a good friend, football teammate, and fellow Naval Officer. I am greatly saddened by his early departure from us and his family. Dave, your work and life mattered, and we will miss you.

Highest regards, Pete Kurzenhauser.

CDR David Bentz, USN Ret, and I were Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS, boot camp for Naval Aviator wannabees) classmates.  Having moved from the FHHS Class in 1973, and too busy with USMC Drill Instructors, neither of us realized we had been FHHS classmates until I heard him mention being a Naval Aviator at one of the Reunions (the 35th?).  He had retired, but I was still on Active Duty in the Pentagon.  We talked and only then realized we had not only been in the same FHHS Class, but also the same AOCS Class under a first-time USMC Drill Instructor (Class 15-80 Thixton's Finest).  While we did not run in the same cirlces at FHHS, and our Naval paths never crossed after AOCS, that doesn't diminish the connection and the honor of his Service as an F-14 Naval Flight Officer and more.  This hits pretty close to home.  Fair Winds and Following Seas.

I'm deeply saddened to only hear of this today. I remember Dave fondly. We were classmates from '75 and Dave was a person you could count on. He was friendly with everyone, it didn't matter who you were. I last saw Dave at Fort Hunt Park, not sure which reunion, probably 25th because he had recently retired from the U.S. Navy. He brought his Daughter along, saying he wanted a designated driver to get them back to Tidewater. We took great advantage of that opportunity and drank some beers. He told me his last aviation duty was really special to him. He had seniority and was told he could take any assignment he wanted. So he chose the Big E. What a tremendous loss for Dave's Family. Too young.

I'll remember Dave for that last short time we had together at Fort Hunt Park, drinking some beers. And I'll picture him catapulting off the deck of USS Enterprise.

Dave and I were pretty much inseparable in High School till I graduated in '74. We met on the sidelines at JV football practice when I was a junior and he was a sophomore.  We both were out on injured reserve, I had a knee injury and he was sidelined from a bad sunburn while surfing (or so the story went). We double dated a lot and partied hardy...remember riding around in Jeff Cain's VW Thing and reaking havoc in the neighborhoods doing stupid stuff.  Dave was one of my groomsmen and later when we were family men would visit when we went to VA beach.  Last time I saw him was when he and his brother came out to Denver and we had lunch, then last time I spoke to him was right before he went on to the 'Big Wave'...probably hangin' ten somewhere! He'll be missed.
